Movies in the Classroom

During the 30 minute session you will:

  • Shoot a short movie using a FLIP video and download the movie to a computer
  • Use Movie Maker to create a short movie using a few of your photos

What you need to bring to class:

  • A few of your photos on a usb drive
  • If you can bring a laptop to class make sure that Movie Maker has been downloaded (free from Microsoft) before class.

Before class:

  • Read this blog post: "Caught on Video" by B. Spankle
  • Watch this short movie regarding the FLIP Video Recorder by D. Pogue
  • Download Movie Maker if you can bring your own computer

During class (more information will be provided in class)

  • With a partner record a short video using the FLIP video camera. You could interview each other, or read part of your favorite children's story.
  • Turn on Flip using slider on the right side, press red button to start recording, press again when you want to stop
  • Download your FLIP video to the Dell laptop in ITC. The FLIP software should open and play video. Notice where you can save or post your video.
  • If you want to view your video later you can save it to your usb drive. It will play on any computer.
  • Create a short movie using Movie Maker:
    - If you don't have Movie Maker on your laptop one of you can use the computer on the right and one of you can use the Dell laptop on the desk.
    - On the Mac computer click on the icon called "How to use Movie Maker" which will open to a web page called "The Flip Camera and Movie Magic". On the right side of the screen there are three short videos under the heading "Movie Maker" -- MM "1 Capture Video" -- MM "2 Edit Movie
    -- MM "3 Finish Movie"
    - Download your photos to Movie Maker and listen to the videos as you play with the software and create your movie
    - You can save your movie to your usb drive if desired

After Class:

  • Think about how you could use movies in your classroom. What kind of projects could you have your students do? What resources would you need?
